How to Wash Baby Onesies with Natural Detergent

You’re a new parent and realize you’re unsure how to clean your newborn baby’s clothing. How do you get the poop blowout stains out? What about mealtime when baby food makes everything messy? What is the right detergent for a baby? Can I use dryer sheets? There are so many laundry detergent options to wash baby onesies, however, I have many tips and tricks you need to know for washing baby onesies.

Tips for washing baby onesies

Always start by checking the care instructions for the clothing. It is standard practice to use cold water in your washing machine. This will prevent the garment from shrinking and help keep colors bright. If it is a poop stain you can opt for warm water, however, this can fade vibrant colors over time. Use your typical wash cycle or opt for the gentlest setting for delicate onesies.

Tips for picking a detergent

Choosing the right detergent as a new parent can be overwhelming as many are promoted to be a baby-safe detergent. When considering detergents, fragrance-free detergent is a great option. Even the most popular baby detergents contain fragrance. Babies have very delicate skin; therefore it is important to wash newborn clothes with a detergent free of fragrance which keeps baby’s skin free of harsh chemicals. It is also a good idea to avoid dryer sheets, stain removers, chlorine bleach, and fabric softener. This can also help prevent a possible allergic reaction. A hypoallergenic option is another good choice for a baby.

The best idea to remove the bright yellow blowout stain from a breastfed baby is to put the soiled baby outfit in direct sunlight. The sun penetrates the outside surface and will remove stubborn stains without stain remover! Then, machine wash and dry using the step-by-step instructions below.

Best natural stain remover for tough stains

Baking soda

Sprinkle baking soda on a wet stain. Allow to sit overnight. Wash according to the instructions below.

Create a paste with 1 tablespoon water and 2 tablespoons baking soda and rub on the stain. Allow to sit overnight. Wash according to the instructions below.

Vinegar

Mix ¼ cup vinegar with 4 cups warm water. Put into a spray bottle and spray on the stain. Allow to sit for several minutes. Wash according to the instructions below.

Alternatively, soak a washcloth in vinegar and scrub the stained area until it is removed. Rinse well. Wash according to the instructions below.

Step-by-step instructions

Note the first time you wash baby onesies the colors may run. A piece of clothing with the first wash should be washed with like colors using cool water and a gentle cycle.

Check the garment care label for fabric type and special care instructions. Always follow the care instructions. If there are none, use a small amount of mild detergent with warm water in a gentle setting.

Choose your temperature. Some clothes will specify a warm or cold temperature. While cotton clothes can be washed in hot water, it’s a good idea to take extra care and opt for cool water.

Use the appropriate amount of detergent. This can be determined by reading your detergent instructions. Generally, use one tablespoon per load in a top-loading machine and two tablespoons per load in a front-loading machine. Anything more can cause a build-up in your washing machine.

Lastly, a mesh laundry bag can be used for small items that are being washed with larger items.

These steps can be repeated for all subsequent washes to wash baby onesies and keep them in good condition. Adapt this new laundry routine and baby’s laundry will become second nature!

Drying instructions

Refer to the garment label for specific care instructions. Typically, most onesies recommend using the lowest heat setting. To prevent fabric shrinkage from hot air, consider air drying the garment. Avoid fabric softeners, as they may irritate a baby’s delicate skin.

Now you are ready to wash baby onesies!
